Phoenix Website Design – Learn How Google’s BERT Works

What makes BERT unique? Truthfully, it’s because BERT provides “context” unlike Word2Vec, Glove2Vec, and more. Previously, I did a post on the introduction of BERT with Say Hello to BERT! and What Problems Will BERT Aim to Solve?

Clear Light Bulb on a Thought Bubble

In order to understand how BERT improves natural language understanding, I will break it down for you.

B is for Bi-directional

  • What do the previous language models have in common? They could move in 1 direction, either from only left to right or right to left. To know the context of a sentence, it uses either of the two directions mentioned.
  • However, BERT is uses a bi-directional approach. A first of its kind! Now, BERT can scan a sentence as a whole.

ER means Encoder Representations

  • What goes in goes out. BERT utilizes an “in-and-out” method so whatever you try to put it, BERT will decode and solve.

T stands for Transformers

  • Lastly, BERT now has a masked language model (MLM), which was impossible in the past.  Before, it was hard to learn the context of a sentence. For a machine, it’s surely hard to understand the meaning of things. Previous models struggled with natural language understanding.
  • For example, search engines could easily mix up the pronouns used. Who is “he”, “she”, “they” or “we” in this sentence? Machines could easily get confused on the meanings especially when multiple pronouns are involved.
  • Hence, this is where the “transformers” come in handy. It will help search engines keep an eye on the pronouns and meanings whether it’s directly stated or implied. This way, BERT can quickly tell who is the receiver and sender of the sentence, and understand the context as well.
  • The masked language modeling is there to stop search engines from taking the words too literally. When there’s a “mask”, BERT reads between the lines and tries to guess the missing word.

BERT in the World of Google Search

More understanding on the human language

  • BERT is there to try to decipher the nuances of people: on how they speak, how they type, and how they communicate in general. When Google understands human language on a deeper level, it is a huge breakthrough for online search.

Seeks to improve conversational search

  • As I said earlier, it is NOT just how humans type their queries. However, it is also about how humans do voice search.

Expand SEO to an international level

  • With the English language that’s being fed to BERT, it will surely master the 2,500 million words quickly. BERT may be mono-linguistic now… but who knows in the future?
  • BERT could master multiple languages and translate the English phrases into various languages. Yes, multilingual BERT could be a real possibility even if at this point, BERT can’t still fully understand other major languages. Eventually, it will come.

Solves ambiguous and confusing questions

  • Currently, people are complaining how the search results are being ranked. With BERT, ambiguity is hoped to be lessened. Google can now have a better understanding at the context of words and knowledge of resolving ambiguous queries.

Phoenix Website Design – 3 Ways in Creating an Effective SEO Strategy Using a Limited Budget (Part 4)

Yes, it’s really a struggle to achieve website success when the budget is only a tiny portion. Huge companies may have an endless pool of money. However, it doesn’t mean that success is an impossible dream. You can still create SEO strategies through being artistic and innovative.

Want to recap the series?

person teaching another person on a laptopDon’t Follow Every Tip You See.

Sometimes, the “best” tips just won’t work. It may have worked for others, but it won’t automatically do the same for your site. Remember, there’s NO definite checklist for your tasks. At the end of the day, it’s the results that count the most. You should be concerned with driving traffic and sales.

It’s time to stop overthinking if you wrote the “best” page title and meta description. When in fact, Google can very well edit them in the search results. So, stop being very technical. You don’t have to calculate every step you take. Try to take it easy and allow some space to breathe.

Acquire New Information from Your Rivals.

Study what your direct competitors are doing. It’s does not mean you are going to copy what they are. All I am trying to say is that look at what they are doing right. This will save you time and effort. Plus, it’s part of “competitor analysis” portion.

  • First, look at where they get their backlinks. Should you contact these sites also? Perhaps, you would want to pitch a guest post for their website?
  • Read their content. Use what you have learned to develop your own website content. Are there things they haven’t discussed yet? What are the topics no one wrote about? It’s time to fill this content gap!
  • If you want, you could also provide better answers than your competitors.

Remember, you don’t have to copy everything you see. Maintain a healthy balance of making original content and citing other sources. Dare to different and don’t just do it because everyone is doing the same.

Call a Friend!

Limited budget? No problems because you could ask help from friends. Resources could also come from unconventional forms. You can do the following:

  • Ask for friend’s advice. If you need assistance in terms of SEO, you can do trade, and lend your skills to your friend as well. Of course, at this time, you won’t be able to pay due to budget constraints. However, you can barter your knowledge.
  • Use your friend’s data as your inspiration. You may use what you have learned as the source of your content. Provide reliable backlinks that will redirect to your friend’s website.
  • Work as a team. Designate the tasks among the members. So, no same group will work on a single task. It’s quite redundant if everyone goes through the same task. Don’t fight over who gets this or that. They are your teammates and not your competitors. Instead, divide the tasks and conquer the world together.

Phoenix Website Design – 3 Ways in Creating an Effective SEO Strategy Using a Limited Budget (Part 3)

Fix Internal Issues First.

Focus on the insides firs. If your website has issues, no matter how you beautify it… it will still be faulty! You don’t want to waste your effort on fixing the exteriors when it’s the core that needs some repairs.

So, I suggest you do a website audit. From A to Z, scan your website for issues. This step might reveal some problems you never knew existed in the first place. To be honest, it won’t cause you a thing. You just need more time and effort to scour the entirety of your website. In this crucial portion, you need to be extremely patient and look at your objectively.

Here are some questions that could help you identify internal problems:

Once you answered these questions, then you would know if there internal problems stopping your website from making any progress. The blog posts can help you in dealing with internal issues: Why Switching Domains Can Be a Real ChallengeA List of Important On-Page SEO ElementsWhen Should You Request Google to Recrawl Your Website?, and How to Request Google to Re-Index a Website?

In the end, it’s highly important to fix these core issues because you won’t be able to move forward. Perhaps, back then, there was no enough knowledge to ensure a smoother transition or maybe a client insisted on retaining certain page titles and meta descriptions that aren’t working. Well, now, it’s time to fix them!

Try a Different Strategy.

Go out there and take the road less traveled. Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy industry!

Try to expand your horizons and explore your options aside from the usual Google. If you are selling products online, why not focus on optimizing your images? Start with these: 3 Platforms to Use If You Plan to Start an E-Commerce Business and 3 More Platforms to Use If You Plan to Start an E-Commerce Business.

Perhaps, you can also strengthen your social media presence. More on: Using Social Media to Improve Brand Awareness.

There Are Other Search Engines, Too!

Having said that, there are also other search engines aside from Google. Maybe you don’t have to deal with Google right away! Remember, there are Various Webmaster Tools to Use for Your Website.

It all depends on your country of origin and on your current industry focus. For instance, in the U.S., Bing 963.5 million unique monthly global visitors. Moreover, there are 12 billion in terms of monthly search volume worldwide, and 500 million in terms in the U.S. alone. This report is from Statista.com and it was published October 7, 2019.

Google might be number 1, but it does not mean Bing is that bad. In fact, the Statista data looks promising! So, maybe stop focusing solely on Google because there are people using Yahoo, Bing, or even others.

Phoenix Website Design – 3 Ways in Creating an Effective SEO Strategy Using a Limited Budget (Part 2)

In SEO, it’s easy to plan for your website when you have a huge team of computer and tech enthusiasts, but also a marketing and PR team. Not to mention, you also need money to finance your marketing efforts.

Previously, I already talked about 6 Ways in Creating an Effective SEO Strategy Using a Limited Budget. When you have to work around a meager SEO budget, website success seems to be an impossible dream to accomplish. Don’t feel sad though because money is NOT everything.

Focus on what you can do.

Now that you are limitations are identified, it’s time to focus on your STRENGTHS. Yes, there might be disadvantages, but you could have an asset that other do not have. It could be unparalleled social media presence, or a dedicated PR team. This could really come in handy when you are doing your marketing efforts. Not everything is about SEO optimizations! In fact, if you want, you can try to exchange your creative knowledge for some significant SEO advice.

Focus on what you are good at, and capitalize on this unique edge in order to gain loyal customers. Your website could get positive reviews or gain reliable backlinks from other websites. Start identifying the things you can actually do and use these strengths to generate an effective SEO strategy. For example, you may not be popular yet, but your business is known locally. So, take time to contact local businesses in your area and collaborate with them. Slowly, you will expand your reach. In no time, you will be well-known both offline and online.

Set realistic expectations.

Next, try to set realistic expectations. With this budget, what can you do?

Of course, with a limited budget, things will not be over-the-top. You don’t have an excessive flow of resources; make use of what you have and allocate them properly. Don’t squander away your resources on things that aren’t the utmost priority of the project.

If you want to redesign the website, that might be an expensive effort at the moment. Plus, elaborate promos and ads might be impractical. Start with promoting your website on social media first. Sign up on the different platforms and start broadcasting your message. More on: Using Social Media to Boost Brand Awareness.

Remember, social media is also the place to interact with other people. So, don’t just endlessly promote because no one likes that. Take note of the 4 Things You Should NOT Do on Social Media!

Take it one at a time.

Lao Tzu once said…

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Let’s face it, you can’t be able to handle everything at once. Hence, tackle each task little by little, and put your efforts on the things that will yield the most growth. First, you may want to improve your product pages or enhance your published content. After, you could work on your product descriptions.

See, you don’t have to revamp the entire website all at once. All you need is to work on your priority list and jot down what the most important tasks are. Gradually start with a page or two until you are able to renovate every corner of the website.

Next? 3 Ways in Creating an Effective SEO Strategy Using a Limited Budget (Part 3)

Phoenix Website Design – What Problems will BERT Aim to Solve?

Did you Say Hello to BERT already? With BERT, search engines can now have a better understanding on how humans communicate. BERT, a new addition to Google’s algorithmic updates, will help understand natural language better. Of course, they will be things that machines won’t easily understand.

Thought Bubble

Since BERT is now in the picture, search engines hope to solve the following problem areas:

Lots and lots of words

  • Since Google values content, there are a humongous pile of content out there. That would also mean, words are everywhere. How can search engines understand everything? Well, this is why BERT is created.
  • With content being in every part of the Internet, words can get ambiguous. It could imply a totally different meaning. BERT aims to solve what a content is trying to impart its readers, and understanding the sentences & phrases as a whole.

Having multiple meanings

  • The English language is pretty complex. Take for example, the “love” could be a noun or a verb. The search engines need to identify whether a page is taking about the noun or the verb.
  • If you think that’s already bad enough, spoken English is worse because of homonyms, which are words that pronounced alike but different in meaning. For example, “read” (the past tense of read) and “red” (the color) sound the same. One needs to listen to the whole sentence to know its meaning.
  • Generally, words may sound or mean different depending on the intonation, stress, and tone of the speaker. If you aren’t careful, then it is easy to misinterpret the words meant.
  • Aside from that, we – humans – won’t find it a difficult task since we are born with critical thinking. As for machines and robots, these thing do not understand the context of a written article or a speech. No common sense to help them understand the given situation. Yes, this part would be a big challenge for the future technologies.

Understand the meaning behind the words.

  • As words accumulate, it’s harder to understand the context. As the great American painter Kenneth Noland once said, “For me context is the key – from that comes the understanding of everything.”
  • Search engines need to work double time to understand the context of the words. Of course, things should not be taken too literally. One has to learn to read between the lines. The sentence’s meaning could totally change depending on the context.
  • For example, “I don’t like you to talk like that.” The first “like” means a verb while the second “like” is synonymous to the adj similar. Thus, a word’s meaning can change depend on the other words surrounding it.

The Search Engines’ Ability to Recognize

Remember, the ability to recognize is NOT the same as understanding.

NLR is not NLU; hence, natural language understanding is deeper than recognition because search engines need to understand the context. Google knows about the problems regarding natural language understanding. That is why now, they are slowly introducing BERT.

Gradually, more updates will be released for machines to adapt and understand like humans. Certainly, there are still gaps to fill. So far, Google is planning to make it a collaborative effort by making BERT open source.

SOURCE: (1)

Phoenix Web Design – Say Hello to BERT!

Yes, you heard it right. Google has a new addition to its list of algorithm. Recently, BERT was added in order to have a better understanding on the natural language of humans. This is Google’s answer to the conversational searches done online. Roughly, BERT will affect, more or less, 10% of the searches.

Google light signage

So, what is BERT?

For sure, you are curious now BERT. Basically, BERT is an acronym for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. According to Cornell University, BERT started out as a research paper.  Jacob Devlin, Ming Wei Chang, Kenton Lee, et al. were the main researchers on BERT: Pre-training of Deep Bidirectional Transformers for Language Understanding.

It is said that BERT can perform 11 natural language processing tasks. Surprisingly, there a lot mentions of BERT, and it ain’t just about Google’s BERT. There are other academic paper about it aside from the one mentioned above. With BERT in action, it has improved the natural language understanding (NLU). So far, Google is planning to make BERT an open source because language is dynamic.  Understanding natural language won’t be an easy task; it will forever be an ongoing process.

How will BERT affect world of online search?

As early as now, the machine learning community has expressed a positive reaction to BERT. In fact, they are very delighted that this much effort has been given to understand and enhance natural language. So far, BERT has been trained to identify words, including the 2,500M words on Wikipedia.

Other companies are also rooting for BERT. Literally, everyone has their eyes on this newest advancement… even Microsoft started their own MS MARCO. The MS MARCO: A Human Generated MAchine Reading COmprehension Dataset  is open source and is created to provide natural language answers. Moreover, Microsoft is heading towards enhancing process of mapping natural text. Recently, it has released MT-DNN—a Multi-Task Deep Neural Network for knowing universal languages.

Of course, Facebook will also have their own and it’s through the help of RoBERTaSuperGLUE benchmark is another addition to identify and answer harder language tasks.

BERT Aims to Help with These Natural Language Tasks:

  • Knowing when words are paraphrased, or being reworded,
  • Providing answers to questions
  • Determines the named entity,
  • Tries to  know the relationship between text fragments,
  • Predicts the next sentence,
  • Lastly, it aims to help resolve translation ambiguity.

Can You Prepare for BERT? Should you Optimize Your Website?

Short answer: YOU CANNOT!

You see, Google added BERT to have a better understanding of the natural language. There no rules on what it should do or not do.

BERT is here to understand what it currently published online. For example, Google Bert might say that a page is relevant since it has now better understanding of words. The same is true if it realizes that one page is optimized too much. Remember, previous updates will still be in effect, such as Panda (content), Penguin (links and anchor texts), and many others. So, just be natural. Try to write as natural as possible and you will be on BERT’s good side for sure!

Phoenix Website Design – 7 Reasons Why Migrations Are Unsuccessful

What’s one thing that is constant even in the digital realm? Change! For whatever reason, you can’t help it if a website needs to migrate. As a citizen of the internet, you know well that changes – be it small or colossal – in the business can trigger migrations. It could be about coping with the latest technology or merely changing the direction of the business.

Woman Sitting in Front of Macbook and Looking Worried

Why Migrations Happen?

Before I discuss what could go wrong, let’s first discuss the reason for migration. Below are the common situations:

  • Changing the URL structure.
  • Going from HTTP to HTTPS.
  • Moving to a new host.
  • Getting a new domain name.
  • Combining numerous domain names.
  • Using a new platform (For instance, from Wix to WordPress)

What Could Go Wrong?

Once migration goes off track, there could be various reason that could have cause this unfortunate incident. Most likely, the culprits are:

  • Did not set clear goals and objectives.
  • Insufficient resources because you did not plan well.
  • Unforeseen changes in the design and user experience.
  • Only asked for help when it’s too late.
  • Did not do enough testing.
  • Little to no response to the bugs found after migration.
  • Algorithmic changes by Google.

Develop a clear strategy.

Migration is not always technical. First, you need to clear set your plan. Know what you want to achieve and ask yourself of the desired results you want to achieve. In reality, you just don’t migrate just for the sake of doing so.

If you want to change your domain name, assess carefully if it is needed. Will the new name help you get more customers? Does it have a good brand recall? Expect some roadblocks and detours unlike when you are just moving to a new host.

Of course, you have to keep in mind that all these changes must impact your SEO performance. You would want to have a wider online presence. However, migration will have its risks so you really have to evaluate and discuss with your website team.

Be particular and plan everything down to the last detail.

It’s important to formulate a detailed plan. To avoid hiccups, set realistic expectations and divide each task. Each member should know the scope of each task and how long it is expected to be completed.

By understanding the potential problems, you can avoid them and find ways to not hamper the business operations. For example, when there’s a Christmas break so people would be expected to shop more at this time. So, of course, you would not want to schedule serious tasks at this busy season.

Do launch your new website before the expected holidays. In the U.S., November and December are filled with festivities such as Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

Never wait for the last minute!

If you need help, do it now. Never wait until it is too late for third-party firm to help you. If you think your team can’t handle it alone, then ask for SEO firms to help you.

Remember, migrations do not happen in a single snap. You might want to involve the SEO firms early on to ensure a smoother migration.

There are numerous critical decisions to be made before the actual website migration. Once these are set, it’s hard to go back and undo. Thus, it is also important to test the changes before launching them out in the open.

Phoenix Website Design – Google’s John Mueller Shared Tips on How to Enhance Content

On November 26, 2019, John Mueller published a Google Webmaster video on YouTube. He took this chance to share his knowledge in polishing a web page. In order to improve content, here’s what Johns John Mueller said in the latest Google Hangout video.

Google logo

Is the moving the elements change the content focus?

One participant commented if moving content within a page helps improve the product pages (PDPs). Here’s the complete question:

“I am looking to improve the visibility of my product pages. Many of our PDPs include a large number of images, which include a large amounts of explanatory texts. My concern is that the associate text might be diluting the identity… Do you think moving the images down and the relevant text up would help Google to better interpret the focus of each of these pages?”

Here’s what John Mueller said:

“So just shifting the location of content within an HTML page… I don’t think that plays a big role at all.

Headings are useful… we can take a heading and see which images (or texts) apply to that heading. But just shifting around things with HTML or with CSS… I don’t think see that playing a big role there at all.”

Having said that, you should use headings correctly.

  • Headings are NOT the place to add keywords. In truth, headings — H1 to H6 — are a way to tell what a particular section is all about. In other words, it should inform the reader about the content overview.
  • It’s a misconception that people still follow. Around 2001, headings are usually where people list all the important keywords. However, this is not effective anymore. Of course, Google has continually improved search through the years. Now, headings are NOT how you tell Google that these are the important keywords!
  • Headings should be able to divide a page well. A page will talk about a certain topic. In one page, usually, there would be one main topic and numerous sub-topics. So, headings help the users to get the information faster. The users won’t have to read the entire page, and they can jump in the right section they want to read. Thus, the headings should be able to describe the section well and tell the users what it is about.

John Mueller reminded everyone on how to properly use headings.

“Headings are useful… we can take a heading and see which images (or texts) apply to that heading.”

  • Clearly, this is John Mueller’s way of saying that there should be relevance. The images and texts you include in a content page should be connected to each other. One should not put a heading just for the sake of having one.
  • The usual mistake is that people put headings and the words aren’t even related to the specific section. That’s why some web pages tend to have lower rankings.
  • Remember, John Mueller said that moving text around won’t help you.

“I don’t see that [moving things around the page with the help of HTML or CSS] playing a big role there at all.
