Phoenix SEO: How to write great meta descriptions

The meta description used to have a big role in how well you ranked in Google. The search engine used to use it as a ranking factor, which led to people stuffing their meta descriptions full of keywords. That’s not the case, anymore. Google no longer uses it to rank a page but it still shows the 155-character snippet in its search results. And that means the meta description still plays an important role in search.

The new role of the meta description is to persuade searchers to click on your page. They are one of the biggest factors that influence click-through rates from search engines. Getting people to visit your page is important. But there’s a second benefit of great meta descriptions. Google uses click-through rates from its SERPs as a ranking factor, so the more persuasive your meta description and the more people that click through to your page, the better your chances of ranking highly for that term. All that’s to say it is important to know how to write great meta descriptions.

5 Tips for Great Meta Descriptions

Keep it concise

The maximum limit for meta descriptions should be 160 characters. In most cases, only 155 characters will be shown and on mobile devices, it can be even shorter. The point is that there is no room for waffle. The more concise your meta description, the more effective it will be. That’s not to say you should leave important information out, however. Make sure you get all of your key information in those 150 or so characters.

Make it an action

Your meta description should read the same as a Call to Action. In other words, it should be in the active and command users to take action. “Find out more”, “read more”, and “Try for free” are all great phrases to include in your meta description.

Make sure the keyword is in there

It is crucial that your meta description contains your focus keyword. Not only will it get highlighted in bold, making your description more noticeable, but Google will be more inclined to use your own description if it sees the keyword is in there.

Reflect the content of the page

One thing you really want to avoid is misleading the searcher. You don’t want to promise searchers something that they can’t find on the page. That will result in high bounce rates, another factor that Google takes into account when ranking pages.

Keep it Unique

Every meta description that you write should be unique. Even if page titles are slightly different, the same meta description will make the pages look exactly the same. If you think you will be tempted to use the same meta description, we recommend you leave it blank instead. In that case, Google will choose a meta description of its own to use.

Phoenix SEO: How to write great blog posts in 2019

By now, every website owner knows the value that blogging can bring to their business. But knowing that blogging is a great marketing strategy and knowing how to create a great blog are two very separate things. If you’re not sure on the latter, here’s our guide to writing a great blog post in 2019 and beyond.

Planning is important

Even if you are a great writer, it’s very hard to sit down at your laptop and bang out a great blog post in an hour. It can take several hours or even several days to create a great blog post, and a lot of that time isn’t spent writing. Brainstorming topics, finding keywords and researching ideas are all crucial if you want to create a blog post that is both informative and effective from an SEO standpoint. As part of your plan, you’ll want to create an outline for the post. This will help guide your writing and keep you on-topic.

Spend a lot of time on the headline

The headline may be the only thing that some people read — so make it worth their time and encourage them to read further. If you have a bland, boring or convoluted title, readers are going to switch off and think that the article is going to be written in the same way. You want to make your headline short, catchy and engaging so that when people read it they can’t help but want to read the rest of the article. Headlines are tricky and practice makes perfect. If you need help, check out some of the most popular content websites like Buzzfeed and the Huffington Post.

Write the post

With your outline ready and your title created, it’s not time to write the blog post. Make sure that you keep your sentences as short and clear as possible. Don’t overcomplicate things and use simple words wherever possible. Subheadings are a great way to break up your blog post and they will also help keep you on point, too. Keep paragraphs short, too. Large paragraphs can be intimidating for online readers so break your writing up as much as possible.

Add images

Images are essential for every great blog post. Not only are they great at explaining your points and adding additional value, they help break your blog post up, too. There are dozens of online websites where you can find high-quality images for free. Just be sure the file size of the images isn’t enormous and to add a relevant alt tag to every image.

Edit fresh

Take a break once you’ve finished your blog post. Step away from your laptop, have a walk or grab something to eat. Then, when you feel refreshed, come back to your blog post and read it through. Read slowly, carefully and allowed. You want to check that what you have written makes sense, that it flows and that you haven’t made any silly mistakes. Read it through twice and, if you can, have someone else read it too. Once you’re happy, you’re ready to post!

Phoenix SEO: How to Monitor for Negative SEO

Negative SEO has been a huge worry for websites at the top of the rankings for a couple of years now. Websites at the top of Google have big targets on their back because everyone wants to take their place. This means that a lot of SEOs will look at what they have done to get there and try and replicate it. Some, however, may resort to negative SEO to knock these websites off their perches.

Negative SEO is the act of trying to get a competing website penalized by Google by ruining their off-page SEO. Here are the most common negative SEO tactics and how you can watch out for them

Dodgy inbound link

Spammy, poor quality inbound links are the bread and butter of negative SEO. They are the first strategy that any negative SEOer will use to try to get a site penalized. That’s because it’s one of the easiest, and occasionally effective, techniques available. A negative SEO will have a network of very poor quality spam sites full of scraped content and simply post thousands of links to a competing website in the hopes that Google penalizes them for bad link building tactics.

Thankfully, this tactic is easy to watch out for. By regularly checking your inbound link profile using one of the leading SEO tools, you can notice bad links as soon as they appear. If you do see any, you can then use Google’s disavow tool to make sure that Google doesn’t take any notice of them.

Duplicate content

This is a less common tactic that spammy links but it is still one that is in use, which means you need to be aware of it. Some SEOs will steal your content in the hope that your great content will help them to rank better. This naturally leads to duplicate content issues. Worse, however, is when negative SEOers steal all of your site’s content and post it to their network of spam websites. If this is a concern for you, you can use a website monitoring tool to check for duplicate content.

Fake reviews

In the world of local business, fake reviews are a huge problem. There is nothing worse than having a clearly fake negative review posted about your business, most of all because it can be very hard to get it removed. These are the form of negative SEO that most businesses have to watch out for more than any else. Check Yelp, TripAdvisor and any other review sites weekly for new reviews and make sure to report fake reviews instantly if you spot them.

It is unlikely that negative SEO will affect your website. But it is important to be prepared in case the worst happens. The more you know, the more you can do to stop it.

Phoenix SEO: How to make the most of your internal links

Internal linking is an incredibly straightforward concept. But it is also an incredibly important one. Every website owner should be internally linking and indeed many are without even realizing it. That’s because it is a powerful SEO technique and considerably improves your website’s user experience, too. If you want to learn how you can improve your internal linking or how you can get started with internal linking, read the following steps for success.

Start by creating loads of content

You can start building internal links if you don’t have lots of pages to build them from and to build links to. Lots and lots of high-quality content is essential if you want to succeed with internal linking. A few good pages aren’t enough. Users don’t want to be redirected back to the same handful of pages every time they click on your links, they want to discover something new and interesting. So before you get carried away with building links, start by building out your content first.

Use anchor text where possible but don’t over-optimize it

When building internal links, you’re going to want to focus on building links within the text of your page, rather than using images as links. That’s because Google prefers links from text and adds more weight to them. Don’t try to force keywords into your content in order to include them in the internal link, however. Your anchor text should be natural and descriptive while including a keyword or part of a keyword phrase where possible. Most importantly, your anchor texts should be descriptive so that users know what they are going to read.

Focus on deep pages

When building internal links, you don’t want to focus on the very top level pages like your home page and your contact page. Instead, you’re going to want to focus on building links to much deeper pages like product pages and blog posts — the kind of pages that people may not find naturally. These pages are going to benefit most from internal linking, both in terms of the SEO boost and the additional traffic,

Make sure you use follow links

There are two types of links follow links and nofollow links. Nofollow links are ignored by Google and don’t boost SEO. They were introduced as a way for sites to tell Google not to give value to the linking page and to not pass any link juice. This is the opposite of our goal with internal linking, which is why it is essential to make sure all internal links are follow links.

Link but don’t go crazy

It is important to build internal links, but you shouldn’t go overboard with the tactic. No one wants to read a page with dozens of internal links throughout. It makes the page hard to read and it takes away value from the internal links that matter. If you find yourself linking more than a handful of times in the same article, you should probably stop unless the piece is exceptionally long.

Phoenix SEO: How to avoid the most common SEO mistakes

There could be all manner of reasons why you don’t rank first in Google for keywords related to your business. It may be that your site is brand new. It could be that there is a lot of competition. Or you could be making some of the most common mistakes that site owners make. It doesn’t matter if you are a huge national site or a small, local shop, the mistakes we have listed here are sure to stop you from fulfilling your site’s SEO potential. Find out what they are and how to fix them below.

Having a slow site

Speed is key when it comes to SEO, yet many website owners fail to optimize their site for speed. A faster site will always rank better in Google, other things being equal. If you don’t know how fast your site currently is, you need to head over to Google PageSpeed Insights. This will let you know how fast your site is, whether that speed is good or bad and what you can do to improve it. One suggestion is to optimize the images of your site to make them as small as possible. Large images can take a long time to load so the smaller they are, the better.

Not targeting the right keywords

It’s not enough to try to target any old keyword with your SEO. You need to spend time finding the right keywords to rank for. One of the biggest mistakes that small businesses make is trying to rank for way too broad keywords. Trying to rank for any terms that don’t include your city or state is going to be almost impossible for all but the very largest of websites and so a complete waste of time. You are better off focusing on more niche keywords with lower search volumes.

Forgetting about meta data

Meta data may not have such an important role in SEO as it used to, but it is still valuable and something that business owners should pay attention to. Google uses meta titles as a ranking factor and so they should include your keyword. Meta descriptions aren’t a ranking factor but they have a big hand in encouraging users on Google to visit your site over others. Business owners should spend time making sure their meta descriptions are as persuasive as possible.

Not having a mobile site

If you don’t have a mobile site you are potentially missing out on hundreds or even thousands of website visitors. Google now uses mobile-first indexing which means it gives preference to websites which have a mobile site over those that don’t. This could mean that your website isn’t showing when people search on mobile devices. Not only that, but mobile websites tend to be faster than normal websites, which can also give a rankings boost.

Not giving visitors a reason to stay

Your site must be designed so that users have a clear path when they land on your website. It starts with your page title and meta descriptions, which should describe exactly what is on the page and not over promise. Call to actions on your website are also important to instruct the user what to do next. These will make sure that users take action rather than leaving straight away.

If you don’t know what these mistakes are or how to fix them after reading this article, then we highly recommend that you seek the help of an agency that specializes in Phoenix SEO.

Phoenix SEO: How Service Area Businesses Can Use Google My Business

If you want to rank well in local search, there are three key factors that you need to take into account. They are prominence, relevance, and proximity. The more well known you are, the more relevant your business is to the search in question and the closer you are to the target area, the higher you should appear in Google’s Map Pack. This is easy for fixed location businesses such as shops to get their head around. But it can be a very different story for service-based business, such as plumbers, builders, and exterminators, who provide their trade to a large area.

Many of these businesses don’t have a physical office or, if they do, their office is located in their home. If this is the case, Google gives these businesses the opportunity to define a service area — the area in which the business will travel to work. This was initially done by defining a set mile radius from the point if their address. Understandably, this wasn’t perfect. Because businesses travel by roads and not in straight lines, there could be huge differences in travel time and ability to get to different locations, even if they were in the same radius area.

Thankfully, Google has changed tack and service-based businesses are now allowed to hide their address and submit the exact areas (cities, ZIP codes, regions) that they operate in. This provides much-needed and much better functionality for service-based businesses looking to improve their local SEO and their rankings in Google’s Map Pack.

That’s not all that has changed for service-based businesses in Google, however. New local services ads are being tested across the U.S. which come with a Google Guarantee badge. This badge is the result of a paid-for ad with Google, through which Google will vet the company and check the quality of the service provided. If customers aren’t happy, Google claims it will pay users back.

How can service-based businesses improve their position and CTR?

Now that Google has improved the way that service-based businesses appear in Google, it is important that these businesses improve their local SEO to get the clicks they deserve. Here’s what we recommend.

Get more and better reviews

Reviews are a huge factor for Google but also for customers. The more and better reviews you can get, the higher Google will rank you and the more likely customers will be to click on your listing.

List in every directory

The number of directories you appear in and the way in which you are listed can also have an impact on how high you rank in Google. Make sure that your business is listed in every directory you can find AND that it is listed in exactly the same way, with the same name, address, and phone number in particular.

Partner with an expert

Ranking with local SEO may seem straightforward, but it can be very hard in practice. There are all sorts of issues that we’ve come across that even some experts would have trouble fixing. If you want to be sure of improving your Map rankings, the easiest and smartest option is to partner with an SEO expert.

3 Web Design Tips from Amazon (Part 2)

I’m back with another post regarding Amazon’s persuasive ability to get people to buy from them. For the second part, I will list down other web design tips you can learn from Amazon. Previously, I’ve discussed Amazon’s emphasis on choosing colors, creating demand, and grouping items together. Now, here are 3 more tips for you.

Tip #1: Select a suitable product photo.

  • This tip may be common, but if you apply it correctly, the effect on your online business can be massive. If you shop for ASUS ROG Zephyrus M on Amazon, not all laptops are from Amazon. Other online retailers like Computer Upgrade King, and EXCaliberPC sell the same gaming laptop.
  • The laptops mentioned above are from different sellers, but all of them used very similar images. People don’t seem to mind whether they’ll buy from Amazon or choose another retailer because the perceived Amazon quality is still there.
  • Just be sure to choose crisp and sharp images because customers will not buying something without seeing a preview of it. Choosing the right images can trigger a potential customer to take action.
  • Make sure that the chosen images are appealing and it will subtly suggest to “hey click me!” Ultimately, the key here is to use an image that connects with your target audience.  If deemed necessary, capture the images on your own because the shabby photos online may not work.
  • Instead, you create the quintessential photo that genuinely represents your product. You have to remember that emotions come first. People always act on their emotions. So, this is where your pictures come in. It should be able to entice people first, and then, you can justify with intricate product descriptions later.
Four Star Cookies

Stars get you more customers.

Tip #2: Add a rating system

  • The star rating system that Amazon is effective in persuading people to try the products available. So, as a seller,  you don’t have to convince customers to buy a product. The 5-star rating will do it for you. You instantly gain their trust without doing much.
  • Amazon clearly focused on building relationships and trust among its audience. Behavioral psychologist agree to this strategy because, of course, customers will only buy from people they trust. Besides that, customers trust reviews more than what the retailers tell them.
  • When buying a product on Amazon, you would choose the one with having positive ratings. Naturally, instinct will tell you to closely follow the product with more than a 1000 positive reviews.
  • As a customer, the overwhelming positive reviews will make you want to buy more. You feel like you are getting your money’s worth. What we can get learn from this strategy? It’s more effective if you let others do the talking. Don’t carry your own chair. Instead, let the positive reviews carry you and tell the world of your greatness.

Tip #3: Free shipping is hard to resist.

  • The ideal scenario is go to Amazon, buy what you need, and then, log out. However, that is not the case. We all know that we always end up browsing for more items. Trying our luck, perhaps, we will stumble upon a good deal. And Amazon knows that!
  • The daily deals are there for a reason. Amazon knows that you will stick around and browse for more items, which is why they added the “Free shipping” offer.
  • If you order over $25, FREE Shipping will be one of your options once you checkout. Amazon does this for all the items with a “FREE Shipping” tag. So, this would mean that  you will tempted to add more items to your cart just to take advantage of this FREE deal. Without a doubt, adding FREE shipping feature on your website will help you gain more customers.
  • Clearly, people can’t resist when they see the word FREE. Whatever you are selling, as long as you provide a FREE sample, FREE trial, or FREE sneak peek, people can’t seem to say no. Out of all the free offers, Business Insider stated that free shipping remains to be on the top spot.

3 Web Design Tips from Amazon (Part 1)

Previously, I’ve discussed Amazon’s ability to upsell, cross-sell, and pre-sell. Now, we will go into details on how they use these strategies. Amazon wouldn’t be the eCommerce giant it is now without these tips and tricks. Below, I will be giving concrete examples and helpful links that will help your online store gain more clicks. So, without further adieu…

Here are 3 web design tips you can learn from Amazon:

  • Tip #1: Colors are important.
    • If you look at Amazon’s product page, you will notice that texts are usually black. Hyperlinks, or the clickable links, are distinguishable because of its light blue color while the prices are noticeable in red.
    • Why is this? Behavioral psychologists suggest that customers tend to click blue links more. The color blue relaxes the mind. Thus, it increases trust and confidence in buying different items online.
    • On the other hand, the color red is connected to bravery and courage. Amazon puts their prices in red for a reason and they would want their customers to take courage. Subtly, it is suggesting to add that item in their shopping cart. It’s no surprise that other websites also use red to promote their annual Christmas sales or their limited-time offers.
    • Choosing the wrong color can make customers leave. So, it’s crucial to think about the different colors when designing a website. I’ve listed the basics of color psychology here. If you need help with choosing colors, these color scheme tools will definitely help you.
Colorful Houses

Learning the uses of colors is important.

  • Tip #2: Create an urgent need for a product.
    • When customers find out that there’s only a limited number left, they will started hoarding no matter what the product.
    • Clearly, Amazon have mastered this and they will indicate how many are left. That’s a powerful strategy right there especially if the customer has been eyeing the product for some time now. It’s going to be hard to resist if he sees there’s only 5 left.
    • Does it work? Yes, because scarcity increases the demand. CXL, an online institute that offers marketing degrees, reported an increase of their sales by 332% when they mentioned that there were only 5,000 slots left. Naturally, people went crazy and they started signing up immediately.
      • How can you create a huge demand for a product?
      • First, you need to identify the need. Ask your email subscribers what to do they too see more on your website. In order to do this, you can create a simple survey for time to answer.  Create forms for marketing and research using these free tools like Tellform, UserReports, and Google Form.
      • Indicate in your survey the specific quantity you are going to release once you received a favorable response from your audience. You need to include also the details of the products or services, such as one-on-one training that gives them exclusive access to hundred of online resources, 50 pieces of personalized journal with tons of freebies, a digital marketing webinar that caters to only 30 participants, and so on. You have to be very specific to get your audience’s attention.
Person Holding a Poke Ball

Person holding a Poké Ball.

  • Tip #3: Group related items together.
    • Amazon does an amazing job in presenting related products together. Their electronics buying guide will encourage you to buy without much of a hard sell. There’s a Nintendo Switch console for sale, and Amazon will suggest other items like the console’s best-selling game: Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!
    • Both products are sold by Nintendo, which means customers will likely buy them both to save on shipping costs. The take away here is to find out what makes your audience click that “Buy Now” button. For Pokémon fans, seeing the Poké Ball Plus will surely make them click. An additional $40 is nothing to them as long as they get to hold an actual Poké Ball while playing the game.
    • Though you already have a controller for the Nintendo Switch console, the Poké Ball Plus will bring diehard fans back to their childhood. It brings back the old memories. It’s very nostalgic for them so when planning a website, you should know what can make your customers buy an item.

3 Marketing Strategies You Can Learn from Amazon

Woman Shopping on Her Phone

What can we learn from an eCommerce mammoth like Amazon?

Amazon made public that the company had an income of $60.5 billion for the last quarter of 2017. These enormous numbers are proof that people all over the world go big during the Christmas holidays. Indeed, Amazon is a major player when it comes to holiday sales. So, what can we learn from their strategies in selling a variety of items? I’ve listed a few of their techniques that you can apply when designing your own online shop:

  • Amazon is known to be the best in upselling.

    • So, let’s define upselling first. It is a way for the seller to convince the buyer in spending more money on other products that enrich or improve the main product, which he/she is already purchasing.
    • Upselling is common in fast-food chains when they ask you if you would like some fries with the burger you ordered. Now, upselling is used by a variety of online retailers.
    • Upselling works no matter what industry you belong to. There are countless of ways to upsell. In fact, in the travel industry alone, a survey revealed that 48% of the passengers and 59% of the hotel guests expressed their interest in upgrading and adding supplementary services to their current package.
  • Next is the Amazon’s ability to cross-sell.

    • Cross-selling happens when you suggest related items that complete their existing purchase. These recommended items may be from another vendor and not from your own product line.
    • For example, when you search for a dash cam on Amazon, one of the choices is the APEMAN Dash Cam 1080P Car Recorder. Amazon, then, reminds their customers to buy it with the SanDisk 32GB Memory Card and the Dash Cam Mirror Mount.
    • Since your customers are already buying something, you can use this as an opportunity to sell them more items. Thus, more profit for you! Did you know that in 2006 Amazon gained nearly 35% of its income all because of cross-selling and recommending related items?
    • If you’re buying a car with a monthly payments of $679, adding another $32.79 a month for a complete car care kit does not feel so heavy on the budget. As you can see, it’s not only the online retailers that utilize this strategy. Even the service providers apply cross-selling!
  • Amazon also applies the pre-sell strategy.

    • This means that Amazon is encouraging customers to buy in bundles. Customers will get their items at a reduced price if they add multiple products in their cart. Also, if their total reaches a specific amount (over $25), the shipping cost will be removed as long as the items will be delivered to the same mailing address.
    • This strategy will encourage people to buy more even if they’re not interested in the suggested items. People think they might need someday in the future.

What can we learn about these 3 strategies that Amazon perfectly mastered?

Consumers are after getting a good deal. People feel good when they think they saved a lot of money from taking advantage of the many holiday sales available online. In order to generate more sales for your website, you need to study human behavior. Amazon has proved to have mastered these strategies. If you are an online retailer, it would be a shame if you wouldn’t put these marketing strategies into good use. When designing a website, it’s crucial to applies these helpful strategies.

Blogging 101: How to Construct Your Blog Post

Writing blog posts may seem easy until you have to try it yourself. Over time, blogging eventually becomes easy. With enough practice, you will find blogging simple as ABC. Unfortunately, there are moments that you’ll experience writer’s block. Words wouldn’t flow smoothly as you would expect them to be. If blogging is a difficult task for you, I’ll help you by listing blogging tips on how to construct your blog post.

blog

blogging tips for beginners.

  • Your blog post structure is important.

    • You should follow a certain structure. Don’t just babble about a  topic or story. Ideally, your blog post should start with the introduction, followed by the body, and the conclusion.
    • INTRODUCTION

    • The introduction should give your readers an idea on what to expect upon reading your blog post. Will you provide a list of useful tips? Will you provide a concrete solution to a problem? Do you need to address a controversial issue? A good blog post should be able to answer any of those questions.
    • Aside from that, you should state the reason why you chose the topic or why you think it is an important to discuss. Give them a good enough reason to stay and read your post. Provide a brief summary on what this particular blog post will be about.
    • BODY

    • This is the second part of your blog post. You should focus on discussing the main purpose on why chose to write this post. Provide detailed tips on how to help your readers. Moreover, give them a how-to guide on doing things.
    • The body should provide the solution you promised during the intro. Be useful to your readers and give them something productive. If your post covers different areas, list your main points.
    • Use bullets and numbers so that your readers can easily follow the progress of your post. Review each step and eliminate unnecessary sentences to avoid confusion. Keep your sentences short and concise as to not bore your readers.
    • If you are out of ideas, imagine you are talking to a friend. Anticipate their questions and visualize what they want to know. You are not obliged to write 1000 words to obtain that quintessential post. Usually, 300 to 500 words is enough.
    • Lastly, if you feel like you have too many things to say, you can split the ideas into different blog posts. So, you will have ample time to explain your key points in detail.
    • CONCLUSION

    • This is where you wrap-up your blog post. Emphasize your main ideas and stress other important details. End your blog post by providing a summary of the solution you presented. Be sure the problems listed in the introduction are given concrete answers.
    • Finally, add a call-to-action button or link your readers to another useful post. As much as possible, end the blog post on a positive note and encourage a friendly discussion.

An impressive post does not just happen in a snap. Don’t get discouraged if words don’t flow easily because even the top bloggers experience road blocks.  It important to plan ahead and research on your topic. Write an outline of what you plan to cover and what each division will contain.  Without a doubt, blogging helps in boosting your online presence.
