After looking screenshot apps on the Play Store, I have successfully came with 5 useful apps. Are you excited? Read about them below.

  1. Droid Screenshot Free

  • Droid Screenshot was previously known as Ashampoo snap. The free versions may contain ads; if you wish you skip the ads, there’s a paid version here.
  • You can take screenshots in 3 ways: a) you can use the Droid Screenshot Free screenshot button, b) you can also press the button on your notification panel, or c) you can take a picture by pressing 2 hardware keys simultaneously.
  • With Droid Screenshot, you can easily capture, edit and share images on your mobile device. You can also load existing photos, and add arrows, stamps, boxes to prove your point. Once you are done, you can share the edited images to the social apps on your phone.
  • Save what you see. Of course, your memory won’t remember every little detail. Screenshot important information and view them at a later date. Droid Screenshot Free is really helpful when you are trying to capture documents, instructions, and procedures that are too long to memorize.
  1. Nimbus Clipper

  • Nimbus Clipper is a companion of the Nimbus Capture. With the Nimbus Clipper, you can capture anything you see. Whether these are documents, images, conversations, and links, you can all save them.
  • You can even save fragments and compile them all later. Capture multiple pages and create one note to assemble them all together. You can easily edit articles and get rid of the annoying ads.
  • Turn pages that filled with ads into a reader-friendly image. It’s now very easy to remove unnecessary content and focus only on the texts and images you actually need.
  • If you only want the images, then, the Nimbus Clipper can help you clip the images you want to us. It also has a document scanner. Sales invoice and official receipts will be clearly captured using this powerful tool.
  1. Screen Master

  • With Screen Master, you can stitch multiple screenshots together. You have an option to put them together horizontally or vertically. Screen Master guarantees a superb screenshot; images are saved without losing photo quality.
  • Screenshots can be taken once you shake your mobile device or pressing the floating button. Various annotations can be added; you can crop an image, add a text, insert shapes, and many more.
  • The file size is only small. In fact, Screen Master needs less than 15MB of storage. The biggest advantage of all? Screen Master is available for free, and there are NO restrictions on its use.
  • Other features include: you can add emoji stickers, blur images, and photos can be saved as PNG. The premium version can be downloaded here.

There are still other fantastic tools you can download online. You might wanna try free apps such as Screenshot touch, Screenshot Easy, Screenshot , Screenshot Capture, and Lightshot. They are highly-rated too!

Skitch Alternatives for Windows

I remember giving tips on how to choose the right images for your blog post. One of my recommendations there was to add more screenshots that will serve as a visual guide for the users. Now, how do take screenshots?

person holding mouse in front of monitor

For sure, when you search, there will be hundreds of free or paid options. Since I am a certified cheapskate, I would list down the free apps for you. No need to browse different websites because I will give you 4 options below.

  • Greenshot
    • If you have a Windows PC, then, you are lucky. Greenshot is completely free for Windows, and you can download the latest version here. However, Mac users need to pay $1.99 to avail it.
    • Greenshot is a lightweight tool yet it is packed with features. Of course, you take screenshots whether you want a windowed or fullscreen capture. You can also focus on a specific region of the screen.
    • Not only that, you can also easily annotate your images so viewers can immediately identify what you are trying to point out. Sharing it is easy as well. You can choose to export your image files to the clipboard, to your computer, and to websites such as Flickr, Imgur, Picasa, and photo sharing sites.
    • Shortcuts make your life easier. When you press Ctrl + Print Scr, Greenshot takes a fullscreen screenshot. Pressing Print Scr alone will allow you to specify what region to capture. That is Greenshot’s way of making life easy.
    • Well, if you consider the looks, the user interface is nothing like the sophisticated Skitch. However, if you look at the features, let me tell you that Greenshot has all the features of Skitch. So, why pay when you have a free alternative right here?
  • Jing
    • Techsmith, a software developer, thought of a free software that offer basic screen capture features. Thus, Jing came into the picture.
    • This is also Techsmith’s way of promoting their SnagIt app, a paid screenshot tool. If you can’t get the best tool, then, Jing is the trade-off. Since Jing is free, there are lesser features compared to SnagIt. BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN JING IS THAT BAD!
    • With Jing, you are still able to instantly capture images and videos. After, you can share it to anyone. The only downside is that there are no built-in editing features. You are only able to capture screenshots, and the video is only limited to 5 mins. Jing is available for both Windows and Mac.
  • ScreenPresso
    • Compatible with almost all Windows OS, Screenpresso is a FREE tool Windows users should not miss. It provides you with both image and video capture capabilities. You won’t have to worry about explaining things to your blog followers.
    • If you also want to present an idea to a potential client, Screenpresso won’t disappoint you. It will capture your desktop for easier bug reports, design collaboration, and HD video tutorials. Plus, the built-in editor makes it convenient for you to add notes.
    • All these tasks mentioned will be easy as pie with Screenpresso. If you want to share your creations online, its integrated support for more than 10 platforms is available. You can quickly share them on Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, and many others.

3 Free FTP Servers

So, the last time, I talked about FTP clients, and I listed 3 FREE apps here. For this blog post, I will focus on the FTP servers. As you know, an FTP server is where an FTP client will connect when transferring files using the File Transfer Protocol.

Like the FTP clients, the FTP servers that I will feature now will be absolutely free. I know there a lot of paid options, but I won’t discuss that. I will just show you what’s available for free so you won’t have to spend anything.

  • FileZilla Server

    • Let’s start with FileZilla Server. The FileZilla Server’s latest version can support both 32 and 64-bit version of Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. It can manage a local server and a remote server too.
    • You can set specific logins, connection durations, and other transfer settings. You can even specify how many users can connect at once, the number of CPU threads each server can use, and so on.
    • As for security, you have the ability to lock an FTP server. Once locked, there will be no new connections created until you have successfully unlocked it. You can also provide users with administrator privileges such as the power to read and write.
    • Windows can also enjoy other features like: controlling the bandwidth and banning selected IP addresses after many failed attempts. Additionally, you can stop certain IP addresses from gaining access to the FTP server.
  • Xlight FTP Server

    • You can choose from 3 editions: personal, standard, and professional. The FREE version is the personal edition. You are given a 30-day trial period for the other editions. If you want to know the exact difference of the 3 editions, you may click this Xlight FAQ page.
    • Like I said, the Xlight is FREE for personal use only. True to its name, Xlight FTP server is a light yet powerful application. It consumes less memory and CPU usage compared to other FTP programs.
    • It was created to handle multiple FTP connections all at once. Xlight is able to run on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 10 computers. With its modern look, creating a virtual server is pretty easy. You can easily modify security details of your server, control the bandwidth usage, specify how many users can access, and so on.
    • If certain users remain idle for some time, they are automatically removed from the server. Xlight FTP server also offers a portable version. This means that it has a standalone version, and you don’t need to install it to a computer. Instead, you can carry it around using a thumb drive.
  • Complete FTP

    • The CompleteFTP Free Edition is free forever as stated on its website. Well, you can upgrade if you want to. The free version is already packed with essential features such as easy to use and manage virtual servers. It supports FTP and FTPS protocols.
    • Once you download, you get the trial version. All you need to do is switch to the free edition via the Licensing tab. Just follow the dialog boxes and message prompts to successfully shift to the free version.

Why Mobile Search Bars Should be a Necessity

When you think of designing mobile apps or mobile websites, you would always consider on how you would improve user experience. What can I add to enhance browsing experience on mobile? What will make users stay and look around?

Bar, Ipad, Mockup, Business, Computer, Tablet

Most of the time, we neglect one important feature: that is the SEARCH BAR. We don’t give much thought on how to design it, where to place it, and how to show the results. These things may seem unimportant to us, designers, but it makes a huge impact to the users.

Just Ask Google.

A search function is one significant mobile feature. It is instrumental in showing how engaging and helpful the entire mobile site or mobile app. Ask yourself, what makes Google so special? Why is it the leading search engine today? The answer is pretty simple. Google is able to provide answers. When you search, it is able to give relevant results. Thus, people keep patronizing the product because Google does not make it difficult to search. With just one click, you have answers to pretty much anything.

The Old Way of Searching.

During the 1990s to early 2000s, it was difficult to search for songs. I can attest to that because back then, there were no streaming sites such as Spotify, Youtube, SoundCloud, and etc. People would rip songs from actual CDs and download them to your computer through the Windows Media Player.

Now, you just search using Google and it will give you options on where to stream your favorite song. Searching does not take much effort from the user. It’s not just the Google that has a comprehensive search because mobile apps have them too!

Is it really necessary to add search function in a mobile website or app? Isn’t it a bit redundant? I will discuss why adding a search bar is essential in today’s mobile world.

Mobile Search Is a MUST!

When you browse websites, there’s always been a search bar. It has been a constant fixture, but people might not see its true value. Search bars are perceived differently than how it is actually used. According to NeilPatel.com, people were asked about the search function and 60% of them opt to navigate rather than search. Additionally, 47% of them wants to search with filter rather than your usual search function.

On desktops, navigating may be easier than searching. No wonder why people chose to navigate instead. Websites have different menus and it is pretty easy to locate the different sections of a website. Plus, when you search, you can filter your options. It really takes no effort to search for the things you want.

However, the mobile version is a different story. The purpose is now different. People switched to mobile because they want things fast, condensed, and comfortable. They don’t have to time to look for menus, view this, or download that. Since mobile screens limit the space, you can’t really add over-the-top design features. This is exactly why your mobile site or app needs a search function.

What sites need a search bar?

  • News related sites, including blogs, forums, and online platforms;
  • Retail websites that has a wide inventory of goods;
  • Productivity apps in order to search for important dates, appointments, schedule, and records;
  • Online booking for hotels, restaurants, and car rentals;
  • Even dating apps need one in order to find the right match.

Designing for Gen Z

Millenials, move over because here comes Gen Z! For those who do not know, Generation Z are those people born beyond 1995, and in the United States, they make up the 25.9% of the population. These people add $44 billion to the U.S. economy. In the year 2020, 1/3 of the U.S. population will consist of Gen Z.

people playing paints

If the Millenials reached young adulthood by 2000, these Gen Z group are just starting. They are the post-millennial demographic. So, how do we address this new group of consumers? Are they totally different from millenials? Let’s find out!

Knowing the Gen Z

If you ask the people over at WPengine.com, they will tell you that internet is a must for the Gen Z category. These people cannot thrive without any internet connection. To be more specific:

  1. 55% of the Gen Z population can’t forego the internet for 5 hours.
  2. 27% can’t even stay away from it for an hour.

You can totally see an internet dependency here, but the interesting part is that the study revealed their mode of shopping. It was found out that 61% of these people opt to buy on websites rather than mobile apps.

Related: Tips in Making a Millennial Friendly Website

Being dependent on their mobile phones and the internet, you would think they will rely on these things more. The surprise is that they also patronize desktop applications over their mobile counterparts. This is why you should not skip optimizing for both desktop and mobile users because even the mobile users prefer the old way of online shopping.

Compared to websites, conversion rates on mobile apps are not that high. Not to mention, apps are quite expensive to make! They also require a lot of time and effort to sustain. Don’t worry because Generation Z wants websites.

How to Design?

ENTERTAINMENT

One of the web design factors is entertainment. Gen Z rely on the internet for entertainment and this is exactly why they depend on the internet most of the time.

Other demographic groups may browse the internet for the need of informational, but the Gen Z are not. They are here to have fun! This changes how you design websites because it has to be entertaining.

Constantly look for ways to entertain the Generation Z population with fun and engaging content. How do we do that? For one, you can start with videos.

Videos are a great addition to a website. Both desktop and mobile users will be able to view. So, instead of showcasing a huge banner on the homepage, why not highlight a short video clip?

HUMOR ME!

After giving them a dose of entertainment, next is to add your own personality. Include your brand’s unique humor. Blogs use a lot of information to lure people in, but Gen Z might not prefer to read. Keep those articles short, and add funny memes to insert humor.

Light, lively, and fun – that’s all they want on their news feeds! Aside from videos, GIFs and memes will be a great addition. So, keep this in mind when you are designing websites in 2019.

3 Free FTP Clients

File Transfer Protocol (or FTP) is used when you are transferring files on a computer network. There’s an FTP client that helps you move files to and from an FTP server. I will focus on the FTP clients for this blog post.

person using laptop computers

The FTP clients I will feature here will be mostly for Windows OS, and they are available for free. So, you don’t have to worry about paying for a program before you connect to an FTP server. Also, these FTP softwares are either accessible through the command land or through its own graphical UI.

If I may add, browsers, nowadays, have included an FTP client. Check if you have an FTP program within your computer before you start to download. Wither way, the programs I will mention have additional features so getting one will also have its perks. Let’s start!

  • FileZilla
    • FileZilla Client is an easy to use FTP client. It also supports FTPS and SFTP client. One great feature about FileZilla is that it is able to crossover different platforms. Whether your computer has Windows OS, Linux OS, or Mac OS, you can still open and access FileZilla.
    • Some of its other features include:
    • FileZilla is able to transfer large files. It can support anything greater than 4GB. Plus, you are able to manage your transfers, and control the transfer speed. With its site manager, you have the liberty to resume and pause file transferring whenever you want.
    • As for its appearance, it is grouped into several categories. You won’t be confused on the location of each section. It also allows dragging and dropping files. No need to look for a file one-by-one because all you need is to drag & drop them.
  • FTP Voyager
    • Solarwinds may have produced paid apps, but FTP Voyager is not one of them. It is absolutely available for free. Just like FileZilla, FTP Voyager supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP file transfers.
    • With its own scheduler, you can set file transfers to begin at your chosen time and date. You can freely download (or upload) files across multiple connections. You can even connect to different servers simultaneously.
    • Windows users can even drag and drop their files and the folders will easily sync with ease. Remember that FTP Voyager is 100% free, but you may need to provide your name and email before you can get a copy.
  • WinSCP
    • WinSCP may seem complicated at first because of its command line UI. No wonder this is the preferred FTP client for engineers and system administrators. Just so you know, WinSCP supports 2 user interfaces: there’s the “Commander” and the other is the “Explorer.” See, it ain’t complicated after all. It still has a friendly UI!
    • You might ask, what is SCP? It stands for Session Control Protocol, and it an old standard for file transfers. But don’t you worry because WinSCP is flexible as it supports SCP (Session Control Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), and SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol.)  You can add bookmarks to your FTP folders, and have multiple connections too.

Reasons Why Emails Go to Spam (Part 2)

I’m back with another blog post on why some emails go to SPAM. Sometimes, you can’t help but wonder why legit emails are marked as spam! You are not deceiving people with your emails, but why would email providers label you as a spammer?

MacBook Pro beside white papers and plant

It could be one of these things listed on this blog post. You could be committing email mistakes without even knowing it. I will be talking about the 4 other reasons why emails can’t even reach the primary inbox.

  1. The bad habits.

  • Email practices that have been effective in 2000 will no longer work in 2019. For sure, there have been a lot of changes in the duration of 19 years. Using outdated practices can get you in trouble. Your email deliverability rate will surely get affected.
  • Hashbusting happens when you add a random character to your subject line to get passed the spam filters. For example, “Y O U W 0 N!!!” Instead of adding a letter O, you added a zero (0) to bypass the spam filters.
  • Deceitful Subject Lines can deceive people into opening your email. Adding a “Re:” could suggest an important conversation that needs urgent attention.
  • Inaccurate Claims. Adding “Y O U W 0 N!!!” in the subject line is not just hashbusting, but it is also a clickbait tactic to lure people into clicking your emails.
  • Converting Texts to Images.Another way to evade spam filter is to hide the texts by making them into image files so that spam filters won’t be able to detect if they are shady or not.
  1. Email subscribers did NOT whitelist you.

  • Sending emails from your own personal account is not recommended. Of course, you need to separate your personal affairs from your business deals.
  • With that being said, sign up on a trustworthy email service provider as what I previously mentioned. Once you send your welcome email to your newest email subscriber, ask them to add your email address to their contact list.
  • This way, you are sure that your future email messages won’t end up in spam. It’s an easy thing to do yet many people forget to do it. We must not forget to remind all our email subscribers to whitelist our marketing emails.
  1. Know where you came from.

  • Email service providers not only evaluate the subject lines, but they also analyze the “FROM” part carefully. Think through what your username should be because that it your permanent email for all your marketing emails.
  • Deliverability rates vary depending on your chosen email. For sure, news@youremail.com would have better inbox placement rates than 1234abc@youremail.com.
  • Avoid weird email addresses such as “adsajn8s@yourdomain.com,” or “qiwu12@domain.com.”
  • Use usernames that are clear and distinct emails, such as “support@email.com,” or “contactus@email.com.” These words definitely increase trust and credibility over random gibberish usernames.
  1. Low sender score.

  • There are companies that certify email addresses. Once you pass their audit check, then, they can vouch for your sender score. Thus, increasing your chances of landing in the inbox. A higher sender score signifies that you are not spamming the inbox with nonsense.

Reasons Why Emails Go to Spam (Part 1)

No one likes SPAM messages, but they end up on our inbox. Why on earth do some legitimate emails go to spam? There are thing that does not make sense!

pink and red petaled flower on vase beside computers

In this blog post, I will share some of the reasons why not-so-spammy emails get marked as spam. It happens more often than not; emails mistakenly go to spam when it should not. Your email marketing campaigns may fail because you can’t even reach the primary inbox. To enlighten you, read on the 4 reasons below.

  1. You bought an email list.
  • If ever thought of buying an email list to promote your products, I’m telling you to STOP.
  • This is not the right direction to take. Increasing your email subscribers through buying an email list will NEVER work.
  • You may gain thousands, or even millions, of followers. Remember that you are not sure if these emails are owned by actual people or these are just bots.
  • Stop wasted money and buying potential emails for a few hundred dollars. Purchased email lists will stain your reputation as a legitimate email sender. Sending emails to the questionable list will alarm your email service providers that you sending unsolicited emails to a bunch of people.
  • Plus, your emails won’t probably end up in the inbox. They will head straight to spam. The more spam emails you send, the more chances you will named as a spammer.
  • So, please don’t send emails to lists with questionable origins. It will send even your genuine emails to spam!
  1. Be careful what you say.
  • Email service providers have a built-in system to check for spam. There are certain words that can trigger spam. Avoid hazardous words that can activate strict spam filters. Words such as FREE, $$$, BUY, AMAZING PRODUCT, and many others can increase the chance of your emails to end up in spam.
  • Aside from that, when you add links in your email message, please make sure you are linking real and authentic sites. If websites you add are shady, then, your emails will also be shady.
  • Don’t say too much. Sending a 30kb (or less) email is okay so do not send an email more than that size. Also, find the right image to text ratio. Attaching too many texts will just bore your audience.

Related: A List of FREE Spam Checkers

  1. Use a dependable email service.
  • Speaking of email service providers, there are a lot of ESPs out there. I’m not going to recommend you one because it is a matter of personal preference. Dubious ESPs may have low inbox placement rates. Major email providers such as AOL, Gmail, Yahoo! may block email from suspicious ESPs.
  • So, check if you are about to sign up on an ESP, be sure they can guarantee that your emails end up in the primary inbox. Choose a credible platform that has a strong partnership with other mailbox providers.

I will discuss more reasons why email go to spam on the next post. For now, I will leave you with What Can You Do to Avoid Emails Going to Spam? I talked about the different tips in successfully avoiding the spam folder.

A List of FREE Spam Checkers

If you followed the tips I wrote on this post, you will know the different ways to prevent emails from being mistakenly identified as spam. Another way to fight against spam is using spam checkers. Many internet service providers grant a free spam protection to their users as a standard practice. Just make sure to switch it on.

Person Using Macbook Pro on Brown Wooden Desk

However, if you are still worried about the fact that your emails will go straight to spam, I will discuss a list of spam checkers you can use to inspect your emails for issues.

  1. Spam Check by Postmark

  • For starters, you can check the spam score of all your email messages. Made by Postmark, this lightweight app is available for free.  Just visit Spam Check by Postmark and scan any incoming or outgoing email messages.
  • So, how does this work? Just go to Postmark’s website to paste a message along with its header and its content. It will automatically give you the spam score of that email. You don’t need to install anything on your computer.
  1. isNOTspam

  • Yes, the name is really isNOTspam, and I assure you that it is NOT spam. If you are on a tight budget, isNOTspam is another free alternative in order to check your emails for any issues.
  • How do you use it? All you need to do is write a test email and send it to the address listed on their website. After that, you will receive an online report if there are any problems. To ensure your emails will not go to spam, isNOTspam do an SPF Check, Sender-ID Check, DomainKeys Check, DKIM Check, and SpamAssassin Check.
  1. SpamScoreChecker

  • Another platform similar to isNOTspam is SpamScoreChecker. This tool check for the email’s SpamAssassin score. Yes, like the first 2 tools, it is still free. Just send your email message to the address provided on the website. If you are interested in availing premium services, check them out right here.
  1. Mail-Tester

  • If you want to “Test the Spammyness of your Emails” as the website suggests, Mail-Tester is an easy to use website that will do that for free. First, you need to send an email and they will do their magic to test the spammyness.
  1. Blacklist Check

  • Spam filters tag legit emails as spam for many reasons, and one reason could be because your IP address is blacklisted. Aside from checking your email service, you should also check your IP address if it’s blacklisted or not.
  • One of the popular websites that verify this info is Blacklist Check. If your mail server has been blacklisted, emails may not be 100% delivered to the intended recipients.  Blacklist Check will check if your IP address is listed in more than 100 DNS based list.
  1. Litmus

  • If you want a paid option, then, Litmus is the answer. Litmus offers a wide variety of products that works well your existing email software. With its set of email optimization, Litmus ensures that emails will not go to spam. It can also identify pressing issues that forbids your emails from being successfully delivered to the primary inbox.

What Can You Do to Avoid Emails Going to Spam?

Spending hours of writing the email is utterly useless if that email will just end up in the spam folder. No one would want their efforts to go to waste. The aim here is to reach the inbox and not the spam. An extremely important email could be on the line here.

It can be disappointing for both the sender and receiver of the email. With that being said, what can we do to avoid emails landing in spam? If you see an email labeled as spam when it’s a legit email, there could be many reasons behind it as what I discussed here. For now, let’s go through the list of things you can do to make sure emails go to the primary inbox.

Scan for legit emails.
  • The first thing you can do is to look through all the contents of the spam folder and start searching for legitimate emails filtered as spam. Then, go ahead and mark these emails as “not spam.”
    • Note: every email service provider may use slightly different words, but you get the point. Click anything that’s equivalent to “not spam,” or “mark as not spam.” The point is that by doing this action, the spam filter will not send future emails to spam. So, make sure to regularly check your spam folder and mark emails as not spam.
Virus scanners may affect sending and receiving.
  • The second tip is that some security programs or antivirus applications may interfere in sending and receiving emails. Turn it off when necessary.
Move important emails.
  • The next tip is to check the desktop version of your email program. I use Gmail on my mobile to respond to emails, but I still make it a point to visit the web interface. I would suggest that you do the same.
  • Not only that, once you are on desktop mode, move important emails to the primary inbox. Emails that need urgent attention may end up going to other tabs such as the social tab or the promotions tab.
  • You may follow these instructions, and you can even tell your subscribers to do the same so that all your emails will surely end up in the main inbox.
    1. Look for emails in the promotions tab. Click and drag them to the primary tab.
    2. Gmail will then notify you if you want to do this for all the future emails from the sender. Choose YES, and all the future emails will surely land on the primary inbox.
Add the sender to your contacts.
  • The 3rd tip is to add the sender to your address book. If the sender is not on your list of email addresses, then, there’s a higher chance that the spam filters will mark it as spam.
  • Moreover, if your email service provider has an additional feature to “whitelist” emails, please use this because it will greatly help in avoiding emails to be mistakenly tagged as spam.
  • You can tell your subscribers to whitelist all your future emails. It can be done in just 1 easy step:
    1. Tell your subscribers to whitelist your emails upon sending your welcome emails.
    2. This way, your subscribers will keep receiving your emails. Also, this establishes that your sender reputation is high enough. Thus, ensuring a greater inbox delivery rate for your emails.
